While our kids are off at camp this summer, I can’t stop thinking about the ones who don’t get that same access.

Every kid deserves to feel like they belong somewhere.

Had the honor of talking with Mira, Director of Marketing at Kayla’s Children’s Centre, about the work they’re doing for kids with disabilities — and why inclusion isn’t a bonus, it’s the baseline.

Building a Place Where Every Kid Belongs — Mira, Director of Marketing at KCC

Mira Lax is a marketing strategist, a communications expert, and the Director of Marketing at Kayla's Children Centre — a specialized school, therapy clinic, and recreational centre for children with disabilities and complex medical needs located in Thornhill, founded in 2017 as a merger of Zareinu Educational Centre and Project AIM Programs. With a background spanning creative strategy, marketing campaign development, and communications management, including roles at UJA Federation of Greater Toronto as Director of Creative Strategy and Director of Marketing Strategy, as well as experience at Idea Couture, CARMA, and Cision, Mira brings a rare combination of nonprofit marketing expertise and genuine passion for making a difference in the disability community. What began as a career in communications and creative strategy evolved into a mission-driven role helping KCC serve more than 450 families annually, supporting special needs individuals anywhere from six weeks to 21 years of age.

Through her work at Kayla's Children Centre, Mira is building more than marketing campaigns — she is building awareness, community, and access for children with disabilities and complex medical needs. Most recently, Mira has been instrumental in communicating KCC's groundbreaking expansion: the creation of Camp Lionheart, a year-round, fully accessible camp for children with physical, developmental, behavioural, and medical needs located on a 750-acre property in Muskoka — the first Jewish overnight camp dedicated exclusively to children with disabilities and complex medical needs in Canada. By combining strategic storytelling with deep commitment to inclusion, Mira has helped transform how families and communities understand accessibility and possibility for children with disabilities.

Beyond her work in marketing, Mira is deeply committed to giving back — her entire career has been rooted in using communications to serve causes that matter. Her background includes roles managing communications and philanthropy, reflecting a focus on philanthropic marketing and community engagement. As a podcast guest, she brings warmth, strategic insight, and a refreshingly human perspective on marketing for good — sharing the real story of what it takes to build community around a mission, champion accessibility, and help families find hope and support.
